OVERVIEW

MediCalc® 9.0 is the most comprehensive Medical Calculator System™. It is the 'standard for clinical calculations and analytics in Medicine'.

Productivity Tool
MediCalc® is a conceptual breakthrough and represents an innovative clinical Productivity tool for Physicians. The System facilitates organization, processing and management of Patient's clinical data (see ). It features more than 1000 calculator panels and offers full Printing capabilities. It is a physician-friendly™ application, intuitive and very easy to use.

Decision Support Tool
MediCalc® is not a diagnostic program (we leave that to Physicians). It is a decision support tool, purely clinical and built around medical processes. The program was developed by Physicians (board-vertified) for Physicians and is designed to help them in the delivery of care, teaching and research activities.

Reference & Learning Tool
MediCalc® provides immediate access to core medical knowledge and offers a unique combination of 'Content and function'. It represents the most comprehensive and integrated repository of clinical formulas, equations, scores and algorithms. It also includes multiple metric|english and Systeme international | conventional unit conversion panels.


VALUES

Normal values
Normal values presented in the program are only a general guide. It is essential to check the Normal Values established by the specific Laboratory and/or Hospital performing the tests. Normal values for a series of Parameters have been taken from multiple sources, often times a weighted average has been obtained.
Normal values and Limits for a given Calculator panel are found on the Table of parameters of that given panel.

Limits represent the ranges that MediCalc accepts as inputs or outputs. They are arbitrary numbers, a wide range is common (e.g. age = 0 - 90). The rationale for selection being to allow figures that represent real/possible clinical scenarios while preventing unreal ones, unfortunately, some overlap occurs.

Inputs and outputs in general must be positive numbers (>0, not negative). When a negative number is entered, or a negative result is computed (that doesn't make sense clinically), usually the program doesn't return a value (or returns NA).


Entries, Values & Ranges

When an illegal character (like letters instead of numbers) is entered, a Dialog Box appears -upon leaving the field-.

Off-limits warning Dialog Box appears when the value entered is out of the allowed range. The Box shows the parameter in question as well as the actual value limits for both units.

INPUTS

MediCalc incorporates hundreds of different Units, conversion factors and converters. All Parameters present their own Units in the same standard format.

UNITS for INPUTS
Always select Units first then enter values
Always select the Units first, by clicking on the appropriate radio button. After selecting the Units, enter the values in the Input Fields.
Selecting Units last is potentially slower.




OUTPUTS

MediCalc incorporates hundreds of different Units, conversion factors and converters. All Parameters present their own Units in the same standard format.

UNITS for OUTPUTS
When the Output parameter Units change, the output field value is automatically converted (recomputed) to the new units (but notice that the Result remains the same in absolute terms). Also, clicking on the Print button recomputes the panel before generating the Print format page.


COMPUTATIONS

Functions
MediCalc performs thousands of functions, a single calculator panel might perform dozens of different computations.

How?
Computation of specific equations always follows the equation card presented in the same page of the calculator panel. Variables and units are specified. If different units are entered, first MediCalculator converts the units to the units used in the equation and then computes the result.

Rounding
MediCalc is designed to round off decimals to a number that makes sense clinically (usually 1 or 2 decimals).

Negative numbers and Off-limits calculations
In general, numbers must be positive numbers (greater than 0) unless otherwise stated.
Results default to NA (or blank) when inputs/outputs are off-limits.

Inputs/Outputs
  • Basic Equation-Pages (with one single equation) require all input fields to be filled out in order to obtain a result. (See Basic Level below).

  • Master Level Equation-Pages (with multiple equations) compute results on the basis of availability (of inputs), they do not require that all the input fields be filled out in order to obtain a result (see Master Level below).


  • Click the CALCULATE and RESET buttons
    Once all the input fields and info have been entered, click on the Calculate button to obtain an Output result. Remember to click the calculate button after making changes to the inputs to obtain a correct result. To clear off all the inputs and reset the calculator panel click on the RESET button. Notice that leaving a page will erase the input data already captured (Sometimes it doesn't).

    BASIC LEVEL

  • All computations in the Basic Level Calculator Panels follow the equations presented in the Equation card (of that particular Equation-Page). Unit conversions (if any) use the Conversion Factors presented in the Table of Parameters.
  • Select Units first and fill all the fields, click on the Calculate button to obtain an Output Result.

  • Remember to click on the Calculate Button after making any changes to the Inputs (values or units). When the Output Parameter Units are changed, the output field Value is automatically converted (recomputed) to the selected Units.

  • Clicking on the PRINT Button automatically recomputes the outputs and generates a print-format in a second browser window.





  • MASTER LEVEL

  • The vast majority of computations in the Master Level Calculator Panels follow the formulas presented in the equation cards. A few of them, however, allow for more customization and have more or different inputs, the 'inputs' in the panel make it clear how the output is computed. All Unit conversions (if any) use the Conversion Factors presented in the Table of Parameters.
  • Required Inputs for every particular computation in the Master Level Calculator panel are included in the "condensed equations" section -right bottom area of the panel-.
  • Select Units first and fill the desired fields, click on the calculate button to obtain the Output Results.
  • Remember to click on the Calculate Button after making any changes to the Inputs (values or units).

  • Remember that when the Output Parameter Units are changed, the output field Value is automatically converted (recomputed) to the selected Units.

  • Clicking on the PRINT Button automatically recomputes the outputs and generates a print-format in a second browser window.

  • PRINT

    Print
    MediCalc® is a browser based application. To print pages simply click on the browser printing command or icon. Equation-pages feature a print-friendly format. These pages display in a second top window of the browser and do not have frames. They are specifically designed to be printed. Users can personalize with their names and the patient name/ID (optional).

    There are different ways to Print:
    1.- Use the Print icon of the Browser.
    2.- Click on the Print icon of the Page.
    3.- Right-click on the mouse, select the Print option, click on it.
    4.- Using the keyboard: Press the Ctrl+P.

    Number 2 is the preferred method, it will generate a page designed to be printed. Be aware that clicking on the PRINT Button of the calculator panel always recomputes results. Options 2 or 3 are recommended when the browser's window doesn't have a ToolBar -no Print icon-.

    TIP 1: For best results, set the margins of the page to 0.2".
    From the Browser's File menu, select Page Setup. In the Page Setup Dialog Box empty the Header and Footer fields and set the margins to 0.25".

    TIP 2: Printing background colors and images slows down the printing process (in some printers). (From the Tools Menu choose Internet Options. Click on Advanced. Under Printing, unselect the Print background colors and images box).
